About Us

The Roses!

About Grubby Knees Summer Camp:

  • Unique, engaging programs for girls and boys ages 5-10

  • Programs focus on active, hands-on learning, creating and play.

  • Wanting the best part of a sleep-away camp, we have Saturday Special, an evening get-together where we have S'mores, sing camp songs and grubbers share what they've learned and created that week.

No Repeats!

  • Though each class in our day camp is offered for two weeks, each five-day session has different activities, focus and themes.

  • It is NOT necessary to attend week 1 in order to get the full benefit of week 2!

What Your Child Should Bring:

  • Water Bottle labelled with his/her name

  • Sunscreen

  • Snack for each Day Camp session

  • Sack lunch, if he/she is in both sessions

  • Backpack, satchel or small bag to carry journal, water, etc. when we explore

  • Come in clothes that can get grubby, and shoes for running and playing.

We're a family-owned, family-run business,

filling summer's days with wholesome, GRUBBY exploration, fun and learning, to benefit our family-run FAMILY... and yours!

Our family of eight--two parents, five boys, one girl--was founded August 10, 1996 when Mom and Dad, both graduates of Capital High, were married in Boise. Dad joined the Air Force in 1997 and we were a proud military family. For 13 years we experienced different regions in our beautiful nation while Dad fixed jets, until 2010, when an injury forced him to separate from The Service. Dad became a veteran a few years before he'd planned to retire, so  we returned, of course, to Boise. During our time in the military, we had seven years of infertlity, giving Mom the chance to get her education in humanities, with an emphasis on Philosophy, at The University of West Florida. Then, one after another (and three together!) Mom gave birth to two boys and we adopted our wonderful triplet boys in between. Earlier this year Mom gave birth to our precious girl. We've struggled in the four years since Dad left the Air Force. Determined to show our kids that The Roses are an UNBEATABLE, UNDEFEATABLE team that can--WILL--rise up and create the future and present we want, we set out searching for a spot to use our education, experience and passion to create the Summer Camp we've wanted to find for our own kids. We found the place right under our noses in beautiful Julia Davis Park.

We're here to give our own kids the joy of working and playing together, to give YOUR kids the joy of learning and playing with us, and to come away from Summer Camp with new friends and happy memories of all the "grubbing" we'll do together this summer!

We've taken care to fill each day's schedule with activites that we'd want our own children to participate in. Building and painting small projects, keeping "observation journals" of the plants and bugs we explore and spending some time running and shouting, along with the variety of artistic mediums we experiment with are some of what fills Grubbers' days. We also provide moments of calm (and you fellow-parents know, they are MOMENTS!) amid the running and playing to discuss through specially-crafted stories the concepts we're exploring, or to sit quietly and observe the nature around us before painting or writing or drawing. We are determined to make all of our Day Camp programs worthy of OUR kids'time and energy, as well as the financial resources of those families who share a part of our summer.
